Largest but most sparsely populated of the Central American nations, Nicaragua borders on Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. It is slightly larger than New York State. Nicaragua is mountainous in the west, with fertile valleys. Two big lakes, Nicaragua and Managua, are connected by the Tipitapa River. The Pacific coast is volcanic and very fertile. The swampy Caribbean coast is aptly called the “Mosquito Coast.”

Nicaragua, which derives its name from the chief of the area's leading Indian tribe at the time of the Spanish Conquest, was first settled by the Spanish in 1522. The country won independence in 1838.

Islamic History and Muslims

Statistics for Islam in Nicaragua are not readily available, but according to Fahmi Hassan, President of the Asociación Cultural Nicaragüense-Islámica the Muslim population is near 500, mostly Arabs who immigrated to Nicaragua from the Palestinian territories and Lebanon, in addition to a growing number of indigenous converts. Recently the first mosque was constructed in the country on a parcel of land measuring three thousand meters in the San Juan district with a capacity for nearly one thousand people. And now there is also a new Islamic Center whos name is "Centro Cultural Islamico Nicaraguense" run by shiite Muslims in the country and their main goal is the spread of Islamic Teaching.
