New Zealand, about 1,250 mi (2,012 km) southeast of Australia, consists of two main islands and a number of smaller outlying islands so scattered that they range from the tropical to the antarctic. The country is the size of Colorado. New Zealand's two main components are the North Island and the South Island, separated by Cook Strait. The North Island (44,281 sq mi; 115,777 sq km) is 515 mi (829 km) long and volcanic in its south-central part. This area contains many hot springs and beautiful geysers. South Island (58,093 sq mi; 151,215 sq km) has the Southern Alps along its west coast, with Mount Cook (12,316 ft; 3754 m) the highest point. Other inhabited islands include Stewart Island, the Chatham Islands, and Great Barrier Island. The largest of the uninhabited outlying islands are the Auckland Islands (234 sq mi; 606 sq km), Campbell Island (44 sq mi; 114 sq km), the Antipodes Islands (24 sq mi; 62 sq km), and the Kermadec Islands (13 sq mi; 34 sq km).

Maoris were the first inhabitants of New Zealand, arriving on the islands in about 1000. Maori oral history maintains that the Maoris came to the island in seven canoes from other parts of Polynesia. In 1642, New Zealand was explored by Abel Tasman, a Dutch navigator. British captain James Cook made three voyages to the islands, beginning in 1769. Britain formally annexed the islands in 1840.

The Treaty of Waitangi (Feb. 6, 1840) between the British and several Maori tribes promised to protect Maori land if the Maoris recognized British rule.

Islamic History and Muslims

Islam in New Zealand has grown with inward immigration to that country. The first Muslims in New Zealand were Chinese gold diggers working in the Dunstan gold fields of Otago in the 1870s. In the early 1900s three important Gujarati Muslim families came from India. The first Islamic organization in New Zealand, the New Zealand Muslim Association (NZMA), was established in Auckland in 1950. In 1951 the refugee boat SS Goya brought over 60 Muslim men from eastern Europe, including Mazhar Krasniqi who would later serve twice as president of the New Zealand Muslim Association. These Gujarati and European immigrants worked together in the 1950s to buy a house and convert it into an Islamic Centre in 1959. The following year the first Imam arrived in New Zealand - Maulana Said Musa Patel from the Gujarat. Students from South Asia and South East Asia helped establish the other prayer rooms and Islamic centers elsewhere from the 1960s onwards, although New Zealand had a relatively tiny Muslim population until many years later.
In April 1979 Mazhar Krasniqi brought together the three regional Muslim organizations of Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland, to create the first and only national Islamic body - the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ). He was honored for his efforts by the New Zealand government in 2002, receiving a Queens Service Medal. Later Dr Hajji Ashraf Choudhary would serve as president (1984-85) before pursuing his political career and entering New Zealand parliament in 1999.
Large-scale Muslim migration began in the 1970s with the migration of Fiji-Indians for work. This was exacerbated after the first Fiji coups of 1987. These were working class in the 1970s, followed by more professional social elements in the late 1980s. Early in the 1990s many migrants were admitted under New Zealands refugee quota, from war zones in Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq.
In 2006, two newspapers in New Zealand decided to republish controversial Danish cartoons depicting Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. The Muslim community registered their displeasure through press statements and a small peaceful march in Auckland. The editors said they did not mean offence but would not back down. New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and opposition leader Don Brash both made similar statements that the cartoons were not appreciated if they deeply offended members of the NZ community, but that such decisions were for editors to make, not politicians. Muslim leaders and the editors got together with the race relations office, and Jewish and Christian representatives in Wellington. As a result of this meeting the editors said they would not apologize but in good faith would refrain from publishing the offending images again. The New Zealand Muslim leadership, through FIANZ, then proceeded in good faith to consider the matter closed and furthermore draft letters to 52 Muslim countries asking that NZ products not be boycotted.
New Zealand now has a number of mosques in the major centres, and two Islamic schools (Al Madinah and Zayed College for Girls). New arrivals at Auckland International Airport can easily sight the new South Auckland mosque on the left of the motorway as they travel to the city. There are approximately 25,000 Muslims in New Zealand although it is hard to get accurate figures as the government is more concerned with "ethnicity" and Muslims come from at least 42 different ethnic groups. The community is noted for its harmonious relations with the wider New Zealand community, with various interfaith efforts from all sides contributing to this situation. This was strained somewhat after a speech by nationalist politician Winston Peters who during the 2005 election campaign described the New Zealand Muslim community as a "multi headed hydra, waiting to strike" and questioned their loyalty to New Zealand.
The Muslim Students and Youth Association of NZ was formed in 1997. It is affiliated to Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ). It is primarily run by students at Universities and Youth in the Community. They undertake regular activities like Islam Awareness Week (IAW), Sports Tournaments and organize Muslim Youth camps.
There are also small communities of Muslims from Turkey, the Indian subcontinent (Pakistan, India and Bangladesh) and South-East Asia, all of which communities are concentrated in the major cities of Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. In recent years an influx of foreign students from Malaysia and Singapore has increased the proportion of Muslims in some other centers, notably the university city of Dunedin. Dunedin's Al-Huda mosque is reputedly the world's southernmost, and is further from Mecca than any mosque in the Southern Hemisphere.
There is a small but growing amount of conversions among the wider New Zealand population and Islam is the fastest growing religion amongst the Maori community. The 2001 census figures shows that 3000 Europeans registered as Muslim in 2001. Census figures show the number of Maori Muslims increased from 99 to 708 in the 10 years to 2001. But Kireka-Whaanga, the leader of "Aotearoa Maori Muslim Association" (AMMA), said numbers had shot up since September 11, as global media focused on radical Islam. The AMMA, the most influential Māori Muslim movement, has roots in the Hawkes Bay province. They view tino rangatiratanga as a jihad, and that Islam is the perfect vehicle for Maori nationalism. Most Maori converts are being drawn to the faith through anti-Pakeha sentiment and a fascination with al Qaeda and the radical chic of African-American Muslim icons such as Malcolm X.

Islam in New Zealand
Muslim Community in New Zealand
Located in the South Pacific, New Zealand is a country of about 60 million sheep but only 3.7 million people, of who about 20 thousand are Muslims.

The first Muslims arrived here in 1868. They were of Chinese involved in the mining industry. When the industry declined they returned without leaving any Muslim heritage behind. The next Muslims for permanent residence came in 1908 in Auckland. It was, however, from 1950 onwards that sizeable numbers of Muslims began establishing a firm foothold in this country, which is known by the indigenous Maori people as "Aotearoa" - Land of the Long White Cloud.

These first Muslims, although small in number, soon began to organize themselves and gather in their private homes to observe salaat, Qur'an classes and religious celebrations. As their number grew the need for a larger and fixed place of worship and education became more pressing. Thus, ordinary houses were bought and converted into Islamic Centers in all major cities throughout the country.

During 1950, the first regional Muslim association was formed in Auckland, named the New Zealand Muslin Association (NZMA). It was soon followed by other regions - in Wellington in 1962 as the Wellington Muslim Association, which later became the International Muslim Association of New Zealand (IMAN). The choice of this name was a reflection of the situation in Wellington where the majority of Muslims were students on the "Colombo Plan", from many different countries.

By mid-1950's, every region had set up Muslim Associations, which were registered with the Government as Incorporated Societies.

At this time, the functions performed and services provided by these Associations catered mainly for the immediate needs of their communities. In most cases, this meant establishing children's classes for Qur'an reading and Islamic knowledge, as well as study groups for men and women.

Despite the scarcity of educational resource material and adequately trained teachers, these classes filled the need for some form of Islamic education in what was a completely secular environment.
By late 1970's it was becoming increasingly apparent that a national body was required to co-ordinate the activities of the regional Associations, increase their efficiency and generally represent the interests of Muslims as a whole, at national and international levels. Thus it was that in September 1979, the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand was formed.

Today, the New Zealand Muslim community comprises about 35 different nationalities. Over the last three decades our number has swelled to around fifteen thousand.

As well as the regional Islamic Centers, four Masajid have been built - Ponsonby and West Auckland (in Auckland), Hamilton and Christchurch. At Mount Roskill (Auckland) a Church has been converted into a Masjid. Islamic Centers are located in Otahuhu (Auckland); Palmerston North; Porirua and Newtown (Wellington). Plots of land have been acquired in different cities for two Masajid and one Islamic Center. An Islamic school is nearing completion in Auckland.

At the same time as organizing for our spiritual needs we have also secured, from the local City Councils, plots of land for our burial.

Schools and universities send their classes to visit our Centers and Masjids to get a better appreciation of Islam and the rituals of Muslims. Universities and other training institutions are visited by us and given information on Islam. TV and radio programmes are compiled, and scholars of international repute are invited for public lectures. Islamic/Masjid exhibitions are organized.

My Life as a New Muslim

By Sr. Fathima Lienberg

I am Fathima Liebenberg, a white Muslim woman converted to Islam in 1995. I am very proud to say! I am a Muslim, but if it was not for my son I would never have been a Muslim. For me it was a hard and long struggle because it cost me my job, friends and family.

My life before Islam

I was a very pious Christian who went to the Pentecostal churches. I used to collect the street children and take them to the church and Sunday school. My life consisted only of reading and studying the bible, until my son told me about Islam.

My son came home one day and said, "Mummy! Why don't you become a Muslim?' I was shocked at the very idea and said, "Never'.

He said, "Mummy! Islam is such a pure and clean religion, they pray five times a day'.

That is when I decided to read the books and the translation of the Noble Quran. The more I read the Quran, the more I was convinced that Islam was for me. I turned to Allah and finally I found peace and tranquillity. I hid it from my family until one day I decided to phone my brother and tell him I was now a Muslim.

My brother was so shocked, because we were very devoted and pious Christians, and I was the only one to be converted to Islam. My family phoned me about a year ago and told me never to contact them again as I now was no longer their sister. I love my family very much and miss them but I know one day we will meet again. Insha Allah.

I was so happy when I received my 'Muslim Identity Card' that I felt like standing on the roof tops and shouting out to the world that I am a Muslim. I lost my family, but gained a new family in Islam. My new family, the Muslims, were so wonderful, I cannot express it. I would like to make special mention of my appreciation to the Fakrodeen family of Prince Edward St. I love you who treated me as if I was part of the family, May Allah reward you all.

Appa Tasneem Jazakallah, when I am in your Madrasah with all the little ones, it feels like I am in Jannah surrounded by little angels. I am so happy that Allah Taala has chosen me to be a Muslim.

I have worn the Hijaab since I became a Muslim and will never take it out. My only wish is to go to Macca even though I doubt that it will be possible but Insha Allah, one day Allah will provide me with the means to reach there. Each time I want to be closer to Allah, I read the Sunnats of our Beloved Prophet (SAW).

Paper will not be enough for everything that I wish to tell you about Islam. I also want to say Jazakumullah to the Kazi family, and I would like to thank our Ulamas of the Jamiatul Ulama (KZN). And to our brother Ahmad Deedat who is so ill. May Allah Taala cure you and return you back to all of us.

Islam is a way of life. Islam means peace and a Muslim is one who strives for peace through his submission to Allah Taala. A Muslim's first duty is to Allah the Almighty and it is out of your deep love for Allah that your duties become acts of devotion.

It is no easy task for me as a white Muslim lady, living amongst Christians, but I keep my head up high and I am so very proud to be a Muslim. So, my dear brothers and sisters if you are born Muslim but have not been a dutiful one it is not too late. If you have not started yet, you can start tomorrow or even tonight. Brothers and sisters, as Muslims, keep your heads up high and show the world that you are proud to be Muslims.

Yours Sister-in-Islam, Fathima Lienberg
